Shaking up the FroYo World

20/02/2019

We can all agree that FroYo is good. It’s soft and easy to eat, cool and satisfying, and sweet with a slight tang. What’s not to like? People from all over the world love frozen yoghurt, and love it even more when there’s a table full of toppings with everything from fruit to cookie crumbles to choose from. But the innovations don’t have to end there. FroYo is great when you want to make a complicated concoction and try to delicately fit a piece of each of your 15 toppings on each spoonful, but what about those days when you’re feeling extra lazy? That’s where smoothies and shakes come in.

There’s a difference between shakes and smoothies?!

While smoothies and shakes are synonyms in casual conversation, the two are supposed to have some distinct differences.

  • Shakes are made out of ice cream and milk and usually have whipped cream on top. They’re thick and creamy and sometimes a little too much for a drinking straw. You’ll typically find flavours like chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, and caramel here.
  • Smoothies can be a lot like shakes, or a lot different. Sometimes they’re pure fruit blended together. But if you want to amp up the tasty meter, add a generous amount of yoghurt, preferably the frozen kind. Some people claim that smoothies don’t have whip cream, but you can add it if you want—we won’t tell!

Drinkable FroYo? Yes, please.

Eventually, someone had the great idea to make shakes a little healthier by substituting frozen yoghurt instead. Either that, or they bought a large container and forgot about it overnight and didn’t want to waste it, so gulped down the melted liquid in the morning. While the source of FroYo smoothies is up for debate, the great taste isn’t. And neither is the convenience. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to grab a cup on the go. You can sip on the sweetness wherever you’re going with a much smaller chance of dripping on your clean shirt.

Are FroYo smoothies healthier than shakes?

With careful planning, smoothies can be a healthy alternative to milkshakes with a combination of fresh fruit and low-fat yoghurt. Or they can be devilish delights with ample use of peanut butter, chocolate sauce, and cream. But because a serving of frozen yoghurt typically has up to 25% fewer calories than the same amount of ice cream, it’s often the healthier choice. Some healthy flavours to try are our Post Workout (Banana, pineapple, coconut water and low-fat yoghurt) or the Sunshine Smoothie (Kiwifruit, banana, yoghurt). There is also the option to add a boost such as whey protein or ginger for that little extra oomph.

Let the kids try one too!

Small kids sometimes don’t have the stomach to down an entire smoothie, and that’s okay! If you feel like you don’t want to drink half a leftover smoothie on top of the one you ordered for yourself, we have the smoothies available for kids too. They’re the same great flavours, but in a smaller size, so feel free to order one for the whole family!
